When originally coined in New York nearly a century ago, however, it referred to women who knew how to enjoy spending their time and money. Whether it was having an avant-garde taste in fashion, a scandalous love life or a rebellious social circle, socialites were all about enjoying life. They didn’t seek fame – these ladies knew how to have a good time and the attention naturally followed.
