The international press eagerly await Mario Sorrenti
The Pirelli Calendar is no doubt one of the most coveted ways to track the year. On December 6th, 2011, New York got a preview of the 2012 edition shot by renowned photographer Mario Sorrenti. The 2012 Pirelli Calendar, aptly entitled Swoon, consists of 25 photographs featuring 9 models and 3 actresses: Kate Moss, Isabeli Fontana, Milla Jovovich, Natasha Poly, Saskia de Brauw, Lara Stone, Joan Smalls, Guinevere Van Seenus, Malgosia, Edita Vilkeviciute, Margareth Made and Rinko Kikuchi. No stranger to innovation, Pirelli will be printing the 39th issue of the “Calenderio Pirelli” in a never before used canvas-lined portfolio format.

Although some photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier and Bruce Weber have had the honor of shooting the calendar more than once, Sorrenti is ironically the first Italian photographer ever to shoot this piece of Italian iconography and chose the island of Corsica as his backdrop. At the New York press event on Tuesday (which hosted a slew of international media), Pirelli presented a video documenting the making of the 2012 calendar followed by a Q&A with the photographer. Sorrenti remarked that he tried to refrain from creating something “overly-sexy” when shooting Swoon, although whether or not he was successful is debatable. It would be understandable if Sorrenti found this difficult, however, as the photographer himself unquestionably reeks of sex appeal.
